  • Winemaker Notes Palmer and its Alter Ego are two nuanced expressions of the Château Palmer terroir, two interpretations of the variations offered by the climatic conditions of the vintage. These variations can be likened, in music, to symphonic pieces and their jazz adaptations, in the visual arts, to a classic painting and a contemporary rendering of the same subject, and, in literature, to an epic narrative in alexandrine verse and a prose poem. Alter Ego was born with the 1998 vintage. It resulted from a new approach to selecting and blending devised to interpret the Château Palmer terroir differently without departing from the values that make the reputation of our wines – namely, finesse and elegance, aromatic richness, harmony and length.
  • Tasting Notes A robust nose of fruit jellies (peaches, sour cherries, plums and blackberries), we can distinguish spices from its time spent in barrels (vanilla and cinnamon), some floral notes (violets), touches of smoke and a mineral aroma. The seductive attack immediately shows its ripe fruit and tender, yet very present, tannins. The wine develops smoothly and retains a flavorful presence that accompanies an irreproachable freshness. It's well balanced and unwavering with a long, delicious finish.

  • Vineyard In creating Alter Ego de Palmer, the aim is to retain the character of Château Palmer, in a supple and elegant wine that can be enjoyed when young. Produced on the fabulous Garonne gravel soils that have made this appellation famous all over the world, Alter Ego has the same finesse and aromatic complexity that make up the inimitable Palmer style. Gravel and clay-limestone.
  • Vinification Aged in the same way as all Palmer wines (French oak and fined with fresh egg whites), it acquires the same ageing characteristics. The wine spends 17 months in barrel, 20%-25% of which are renewed each year. To ensure that the oak flavors do not dominate, the barrels are lightly toasted, allowing the natural oak tannins to add subtle aromas, while preserving the fat and allowing the young, fresh fruit aromas to come through.
  • Viticulture Gravel and clay-limestone.
