WINEMAKER NOTES
Between Orange and Avignon, on the left bank of the Rhone River, the old Pope’s Castle was edified. Pilgrims, Crusaders, Templars, Hugenots, Popes and Kings, as well as Thieves and Invaders all passed through this remarkable place. Two longstanding and well known families of Chateauneuf du Pape, Jeune and Establet, who can trace their ancestors back to the 14th century, united their properties by a marriage between Christiane Establet and Pierre Elie Jeune in 1960’s, and the Domaine du Grand Tinel was established in 1972.
TASTING NOTES
A charming, fruit forward and delicious 2015 that offers lots of strawberry, black raspberry, garrigue and spice aromas and flavors.
VINEYARD
Silica-clayish soils with rounded pebbles.
VITICULTURE
Average age of vines are 40 years.
VINIFICATION
Grapes are de-stemmed before fermentation. Vinification takes place in a combination of stainless steel or cement vat. The wine is aged in a combination of foudres or small oak vats.
PRESS
“Bright ruby-red. Expressive aromas of ripe red and dark berries on the perfumed nose, along with hints of lavender and allspice. Sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors deepen slowly and become sweeter with aeration. Shows good depth as well as energy and finishes impressively long, featuring repeating red fruit character and rounded tannins that come in late.” – (90-92) points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous
“Tasted prior to bottling, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape looks a bit short of the charming 2015, but it could still get there. Raspberry and herb notes appear on the nose of this full-bodied wine, which is silky and fresh, not too rich or concentrated. Drink it over the next 6-7 years.” – (89-92) points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
